Our Pillars
Northside Neighbors is advancing a coordinated, resident-centered strategy to strengthen the Hawthorne and Walt Whitman neighborhoods through mixed-income housing, cradle-to-career education, community wellbeing, and local economic vitality. As the Community Quarterback Organization, it aligns partners and investment to build stability, opportunity, and lasting benefits for residents across generations.
Mixed-Income Housing
As a Community Quarterback Organization, Northside Neighbors will implement mixed-income housing strategies that expand access to homeownership opportunities and high-quality rental options for households across a broad range of incomes. These strategies are designed to stabilize the neighborhoods, strengthen generational wealth for legacy residents, and encourage long-term commitment from new residents.
By fostering mixed-income communities in Hawthorne and Walt Whitman neighborhoods, Northside Neighbors will help create daily opportunities for relationships and connections to form across socioeconomic lines. These connections—rooted in shared spaces, schools, and community life—serve as a powerful springboard to improved outcomes in education, health, and economic mobility for all residents.
Cradle-to-Career Education
In the Hawthorne and Walt Whitman neighborhoods, Northside Neighbors will center great schools as anchors for long-term neighborhood stability and opportunity. We recognize that schools do more than educate children—they strengthen community identity, uplift culture, and generate lasting economic and social value for residents.
Working in close partnership with legacy residents, families, Tulsa Public Schools, early childhood providers, and community-based and higher education organizations, Northside Neighbors will help build and strengthen a high-quality cradle-to-career education pipeline. This work will begin in infancy with access to early learning and family supports, continue through strong K–12 experiences, and extend to postsecondary education, workforce training, and lifelong learning.
Community Wellbeing
In the Hawthorne and Walt Whitman neighborhoods, Northside Neighbors will focus on creating healthy, connected communities where residents of all ages have the conditions they need to thrive. We believe community wellbeing is rooted not only in physical health, but also in access to nature, cultural expression, and a strong sense of belonging.
As the Community Quarterback Organization, Northside Neighbors will work alongside residents, local organizations, health providers, environmental partners, and the City of Tulsa to build and activate community facilities, outdoor spaces, and neighborhood-based programming. This includes expanding access to safe parks and green spaces, supporting community gardens and food access initiatives to address food deserts, and promoting walkable, clean, and environmentally sustainable neighborhoods.
Economic Vitality
In the Hawthorne and Walt Whitman neighborhoods, Northside Neighbors will strengthen economic vitality by ensuring that commercial activity and investment directly benefit residents. We recognize that sustaining great housing, excellent schools, and improved community wellbeing requires a healthy local economy rooted in neighborhood needs and opportunities.
As the Community Quarterback Organization, Northside Neighbors will work with residents, entrepreneurs, anchor institutions, and public and private partners to attract and grow high-quality goods, services, and retail that reflect the culture of the neighborhood and meet every day needs. This includes supporting neighborhood-scale commercial development and helping fill gaps in essential services.
